This isn’t so much a bad movie as a cynical one. It’s telling I think that the thing that makes the toy shop at the centrepiece of this family film spring to life every morning is pressing a button on the cash register. Deliberate or otherwise, it's certainly a hint that this movie is all about the cash registers ringing. This movie has so much product placement, and yes they did say the same about Toy Story, but this is so much more overt.
And where Toy Story had a heart, this feels like a much more contrived stitching together of ideas from all the classic kid’s movies: a little Charlie and the Chocolate Factory here, a sprinkling of Mary Poppins stardust there, and most peculiarly Natalie Portman prancing around wearing Dorothy from Oz’s dress (a piece of wardrobework to keep both straight and gay men happy!). Oh, and Dustin Hoffman is frankly bizarre as Mr Magorium, having seemingly stolen his character from the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland as far as I could tell (all teeth and cheeks).
That being said, your kids will love it. Just have your wallet ready to buy them all the goodies they’ll want after having watched it: this movie will leave your financially as well as spiritually bankrupt.

The only reason I let my kids check this movie out was because I wanted to see Jason Bateman in it. I really loved him in Arrested Development and want him to do well. This may not be the best vehicle for that, but at least it's solid screen time.
